As a design thinking facilitator, I watch faces light up with recognition when I begin my workshops with this familiar phrase. Then, I watch those same faces transform from confidence to confusion when I follow it with: “That’s exactly what we’re not going to do.”
The silence that follows is always telling. The foundation of design thinking is exactly the opposite – “think inside the box.” The moment of true transformation comes when participants realize that creativity isn’t about escaping constraints, but about generating ideas that are useful, inspirational, and contextual. They discover that innovation happens not by ignoring the box, but by thoroughly exploring every corner within it.
This fundamental insight has become even more relevant in the age of AI. When I first encountered AI tools in my creative process, I noticed something fascinating: they weren’t replacing this principle of constrained creativity – they were amplifying it. Just as I guide workshop participants to explore deeply within their constraints rather than ignore them, AI serves as a tireless exploration partner, helping us discover possibilities we might have missed while keeping us anchored to our practical boundaries.
